Highlights

Hen Mountain

This path beneath Hen Mountain is the location where Dunk buries Ser Arlan of Pennytree.

Tollymore Forest

Wills finds the dismembered wildling bodies, Tyrion and Jon’s campfire, Dunk and Ser Arlan’s campfire and the bridge where the Starks find a dead direwolf and her pups.

Castle Ward

King Robert Baratheon arrives to ask Ned to be Hand of the King. Other scenes include the crossing at the Twins and Robb’s Camp at Moat Cailin.

Inch Abbey

12th century Cistercian Abbey where Catelyn and Robb hear terrible news from King’s Landing. Robb’s bannermen pledge fealty to him as the ‘King in the North’.

This tour starts in the depths of Tollymore Forest at the location in the first episode where Wills of the Night’s Watch finds dismembered Wildling bodies in the snow. Your guide will use video clips, screenshots and VFX clips to show how each location was shot. After lunch, the tour visits Old Castle Ward, the film location of Winterfell Castle where King Robert asks Ned to be Hand of the King. Close to Old Castle Ward are the ruins of Inch Abbey where Robb Stark’s bannermen pledged fealty to him as ‘the King in the North’. Finally, weather permitting, you’ll walk up an inclining path underneath Hen Mountain to the exact film location where Ser Duncan the Tall buried his master, Ser Arlan of Pennytree.

In the trunk of the coach we have Stark wool cloaks, metal swords and hand-painted Stark banners for everyone. The is the only coach tour from Dublin that visits these locations in County Down, far away from the tourist crowds.

Pickup Point

Itinerary

07:30 Meeting time

Pickup point is the front door of the Hilton Garden Inn, Custom House Quay, Dublin D01 V9X5.

07:45 Departure time

The coach will leave Dublin city centre via the Port Tunnel.

Comfort Stop at Castlebellingham

Comfort stop for 15 mins at Castlebellingham Applegreen service station on the M1, northbound.

Morning trek in Tollymore Forest (3km trek)

Arrive at Tollymore Forest Park. Covering 630 hectares (1,600 acres), this forest is the backlot for many key scenes, such as the pit where Wills finds the dismembered bodies in the snow, Tyrion and Jon’s campfire on their journey north to the Wall and the bridge where the Starks discover a dead direwolf and her pups.

Lunch at the Lobster Pot, Strangford

We pass around a menu and order sheet in the coach to pre-order hot food in the Lobster Pot pub in Strangford. This pub lunch is not included in your ticket price. You may of course bring a packed lunch instead.

Afternoon visit to Winterfell

Visit Old Castle Ward, the 16th century Tower House and stableyard that were used as the film location of Winterfell in season one. Nearby, on the wooded shores of Strangford Lough, a 15th century Tower House (small castle) served as one of Walder Frey’s Twins and as the location of Robb Stark’s Camp at Moat Cailin. If the weather is good and your guide decides you can visit Ser Arlan of Pennytree’s Grave as your last visit, then this stop is only for 30 minutes, to Old Castle Ward courtyard, . If the weather is not good enough for Ser Arlan of Pennytree’s Grave (because it’s on a mountain exposed to the elements) then you’ll do a 90 minute walking tour of Castle Ward Estate to Audley’s Castle (the Twins), Audley’s Field (Robb Stark’s Camp at Moat Cailin), the tree in the Riverlands where Brienne and Jamie find the bodies of three women and a few other locations.

Inch Abbey: King in the North

Photo stop in the ruins of the 12th century Cistercian Abbey where Catelyn and Robb hear terrible news from King’s Landing, and Robb’s bannermen pledge fealty to him as the ‘King in the North’.

Hen Mountain: Ser Arlan of Pennytree’s Grave

Last visit of the day is a steep uphill walk to the foothills of Hen Mountain, where Ser Duncan the Tall buries his master, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, in the opening scene of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’. The 30-minute walk to this location is exposed to the elements so this stop is weather permitting.

19:30 Arrive back in Dublin

Arrive back at the Hilton Garden Inn, drop-off of all passengers.

Under 18 Policy

Please note that:
1. Game of Thrones® is full of adult content and is rated 18+ in the UK and Ireland
2. Our tours include walking treks, often over uneven surfaces, and
3. Our customers use metal props as part of the experience
Accordingly, we do not permit children under the age of 12 to do any of our coach tours. This is why there is no children’s ticket price. If you purchase a ticket for a young person between 12 and 18, we need a written waiver from a parent or guardian. Please email us at belfast@gameofthronestours.com, stating the Booking ID and young person’s age.

Do I need a passport, UK visa or UK ETA?

Ireland is in the EU, while Northern Ireland is part of the UK. On this tour, you’ll leave the EU at 9:15, enter the UK, then return to the EU at 18:00. While no passport, ID, or visa checks occur at the border, non-UK/Irish passport holders need a valid ETA.
Why no document checks but ETA required:

  • The 1998 agreement removed all passport and visa checks at the land border between Ireland and Northern Ireland due to numerous crossing points and daily cross-border traffic. This remains in effect post-Brexit.
  • There are no border controls between Ireland and Northern Ireland for people or goods, with none planned for the future.
  • From April 2, 2025, visitors without UK or Irish passports should have a valid Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). An ETA can be obtained easily through GOV.UK. It costs £16 and remains valid for two years.
