Highlights

Hen Mountain

This path beneath Hen Mountain is the location where Dunk buries Ser Arlan of Pennytree.

Castle Ward

King Robert Baratheon arrives to ask Ned to be Hand of the King. Other scenes include the crossing at the Twins and Robb’s Camp at Moat Cailin.

Inch Abbey

Catelyn and Robb hear terrible news from King’s Landing. Robb’s bannermen pledge fealty to him as ‘King in the North’.

Tollymore Forest

Wills finds the dismembered bodies in the snow north of the Wall. Tyrion & Jon’s campfire, Dunk & Ser Arlan’s campfire. The Starks find a dead direwolf and her pups.

This tour visits a lot of locations associated with House Stark in the early seasons. The first visit of the day is Inch Abbey, the crumbling 12th century ruin where Robb Stark became ‘King in the North’. Then a 15 minute drive to Old Castle Ward, original location of Winterfell Castle in season 1. After lunch, you’ll visit Tollymore Forest which featured as the Haunted Forest north of the Wall in the opening scene where the Night’s Watch find dismembered wildling bodies in the snow. Tollymore was also used for Tyrion & Jon Snow’s campfire in season 1, Dunk & Ser Arlan’s campfire in the flashback sequence during the Trial of Seven, and as the Wolfswood where the Starks find the direwolf pups. Finally, last stop of the day is Hen Mountain, where Dunk buries Ser Arlan of Pennytree (weather permitting).

Itinerary

07:45 Meeting time

Pickup point is the front door of Leonardo Hotel (formerly Jurys Inn), Great Victoria Street, Belfast BT1 6DY. The coach will arrive at 07:45.

08:00 Departure time

Depart from Leonardo Hotel.

Hen Mountain: Ser Arlan of Pennytree’s Grave

First visit of the day is a gradual uphill walk into the foothills of Hen Mountain, where Ser Duncan the Tall buries his master, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, in the opening scene of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’. The 30-minute walk to this location is exposed to the elements so this stop is weather permitting.

Morning Trek in Tollymore Forest (3km)

Arrival at Tollymore Forest Park. This forest park, covering 630 hectares (1,600 acres) was used for many key scenes, including where Wills finds the dismembered bodies in the snow, Tyrion and Jon’s campfire on their journey north to the wall and the bridge where the Starks find a dead direwolf and her pups. Tollymore also appeared in the flashback sequence during the Trial of Seven, where Dunk sleeps near Ser Arlan’s ‘hedge’ camp.

Lunch at the Barn pub

On the coach trip from Belfast to Winterfell, we pass around a menu for pre-ordering hot food at the Barn, a pub in Saul – see https://www.thebarnsaul.com/. Alternatively, you can bring your own packed lunch. Lunch is not included in the ticket price.

Afternoon trek at Winterfell (3km)

Visit Old Castle Ward, the 16th century Tower House and stableyard that were used as the film location of Winterfell in season 1. Your guide will bring you on a 90-minute walking tour of locations along the wooded shores of Strangford Lough to Audley’s Castle, which served as one of Walder Frey’s Twins and as the location of Robb Stark’s Camp at Moat Cailin. Nearby is the tree where Robb marries Talisa and a shoreline tree in the Riverlands where Brienne of Tarth, with Jaime Lannister as her prisoner, dispatches three Stark soldiers.

Inch Abbey: King in the North

Photo stop at the ruins of a 12th century Cistercian Abbey where Catelyn and Robb hear terrible news from King’s Landing and Robb’s bannermen pledge fealty to him as the ‘King in the North’. For those who want to get fully immersed in the mood of the North, in the trunk of the coach there are plenty of Northern cloaks, metal swords and Stark banners.

17:30 Arrive back in Belfast

Arrive back at Belfast city centre. Drop-off of all passengers.
